What a retractable pergola is
A retractable pergola is an aluminium pergola with a technical fabric roof instead of a rigid one. The fabric runs along two side guides, held taut by cross-members, and folds back against the wall or the front when you want the open sky. With the right slope, rainwater runs into the front gutter and down inside the posts. Prices start from €600/m² + VAT, installation included.
Summer terrace
Open on a mild evening, closed in the midday sun or in a sudden shower, usually with a motor.
Garden and patio
Wall-mounted against the house, or freestanding on four posts where there is no wall or it cannot be drilled.
Outdoor dining
For restaurants and bars, the lightest structure to cover tables that you want to open on fine days.
Closed on the sides
Clear PVC curtains, ZIP screens, sliding glass or insect screens turn it into a sheltered room.
Five parts, one rule: keep the fabric taut
Technical fabric
Waterproof, blackout or translucent. You choose it from the sample book at the survey, looking at the light on your terrace.
Side guides
Aluminium profiles with a slope designed for drainage; the cross-members slide in them and keep the fabric under tension.
Posts and gutter
The front gutter collects the water from the fabric and sends it down inside the posts.
Wall or freestanding
Fixed to the façade, or standing on four posts when the wall is missing or must not be drilled.

Planning: the Italian list of works that need no building permit (Ministerial Decree of 2 March 2018) names the retractable pergola among outdoor furnishings, so in most cases no permit is needed. Landscape constraints, historic centres and condominium rules still have to be checked, and we do that before the project.
